Pleasantly surprised to hear Choklate’s voice on this new Nas track. Which makes me wonder if it might be a Jake One, Vitamin D or Bean One beat. Doesn’t quite have that trademark Seattle sound. (EDIT: A few folks have told me that C-Sick, who won the Red Bull Big Tune competition last year, is responsible for the beat. Peep his music on Myspace.com) You can snatch up “Film” here.
Also be sure to get your hands on Choklate’s recently released album To Whom It May Concern at Amazon.com or iTunes!

If r&b had a king, then R. Kelly certainly would have held the throne during the 1990s. His countless solo hits like “Honey Love,” “Bump N’ Grind,” and “You Remind Me Of Something” redefined the slow jam. Super smooth and soulful production combined with overly sexual serenades made for timeless hits. And arguably his best work came in the form of producing and overseeing Aaliyah’s timeless debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number.
While his new material has proven largely disposable, his stepping music remains on request at parties and in clubs. Out of that pool of songs “Thank God It’s Friday” always gets overlooked since it’s a non-single from his third album released in 1995. What’s better than talking about the weekend and getting overly emotional about it?

To date there’s never been a better duo of emcees than Narcotik in the 206. The group consisted of C-Note and Tizzy T with Vitamin D providing the soundtrack. “All Up In My Mix” epitomizes everything dope about the crew – the perfect combination of influence of both the West and East Coast hip-hop in both lyrical content and production.
I can distinctly remember hitting up Folk Life back in the late 90s and seeing Narcotik having every head bobbing in the crowd. And the crew’s contributions on the Tribal Do The Math compilation stayed in rotation in the Landcruiser throughout the summer of 1998. While the released material is hard to come by its influence is still felt with Jake One enlisting C-Note for a verse on “Home” – the Seattle anthem on his solo album White Van Music.

The signing of Reggie Moore, a former Rainier Beach standout, should be a sign of good things to come for the Cougars with Ken Bone at the helm. It’s been a minute since WSU has had any notable Seattle metro area hoopers on its roster.
Beach’s Randy Green walked on a few years back and worked his way into the rotation. Kent-Meridian’s Mike Bush came from well Kent and excelled more in football as a wide receiver. Nathan Hale’s Tavares Mack donned the crimson & gray in the mid 1990s. And who could forget the legendary Tony Harris from Garfield?! (RIP)
Can anybody name any other Seattle area guys? And no Mark Hendrickson doesn’t count.

Jeff Hironaka

Jeff Hironaka will assist his former boss Ken Bone at Washington State. The only known Japanese-American head coach of a four-year college basketball program in the country at the time of his hiring in 2002, Hironaka leaves that position at Seattle Pacific where he amassed a record of 134-62.
One would assume this would position Hironaka as potentially the first Division I head coach, but he would have to join the ranks of Rex Walters, former NBA journeyman and half Japanese. Walters broke into the coaching ranks at Florida Atlantic in 2006 and now has taken over at the University of San Francisco.
Unbeknown to most, Wat Misaka broke the NBA’s color barrier back in 1947 as a member of the New York Knicks, appearing in three games before being cut. A Nisei Japanese-American (second generation), Misaka grew up in Ogden, Utah and led the University of Utah to an NCAA Championship in 1944.
Yuta Tabuse became the first Japanese-born player in the NBA debuting with the Phoenix Suns in 2004. He played in a total of four games before the team waived him and has since toiled in the NBDL and on NBA summer league teams.

Love him or hate him, Rick Ross has established himself as a boss. His ear for beats gets better and better. Self-admitted haters of the big dude convert into believers everyday.
His third album Deeper Than Rap ranks as his best to date. Lacking any real radio charting songs, Ross opts for that hypnotizing vibe that you’d bump in the whip with the windows down on a hot summer night.
Even with a number of impressive songs leaking prior to the street date, Yacht Club ranks as one of the album’s best. Bump that.

Congratulations to Cameron Dollar whom Seattle University officially announced today at its new head coach. A longtime assistant to Lorenzo Romar at the UW and Saint Louis, Dollar undertakes the task of renewing the Redhawk program back to respectability and Division I basketball.
Instantly Seattle U should benefit from Dollar’s dynamic personality and youth through recruiting the talent rich Puget Sound. Instead of talents like Garrison Carr (Issaquah) going across the country to American or Alvin Snow (Franklin) just over the mountains to Eastern Washington – First Hill could easily turn into the destination of choice for area recruits.
The Huskies meanwhile must now search for a new assistant that the players view as both an authority figure and a peer like Dollar, 33. Remaining assistants include Paul Fortier (45) and Jim Shaw (46).
